A Letter on the explanation of the Open Source philosophy and approach by Fr. V.E.L., A.D. 2009 I.E. 5769

You know, the still living currents of the Golden Dawn can be distinguished between: (1) the Traditional Hermetic Order of The Golden Dawn and (2) the Open Source Order of the Golden Dawn.  If so, the the question could be: which one is the most authentic?  And why?

The answer we give here is that both the Order are authentic.  This is not and ecumenical answer, because there is a sword inside the explanation which follows, to separate and distinguish with the strenght of the power of Geburah.

Both the Order are authentical, because both are historically well founded.  But the difference is very important and deep, with roots in their early history.  And if the first one, The Traditional Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, is a form of christian esotericism, derived by the version of the Rosicrucian`s system reshaped by German Jesuits (therefore, in a counter-Reform perspective).    Instead, the second one, The Open Source Order of the Golden Dawn, while got something from the Rosicrucian tradition because of historical connection (as we demonstrate into the Epistulae ad Romanos, ad Britanni, ad Teutonicos), instead it is totally focused on the doctrine of Enlightenment, and its deep sources which comes from the Zohar and the Qabalistic tradition.

This difference is marked even in the early steps in the life of the Order, I would say even before the Order of the Golden Dawn appeared, in reason of the German origins of the document which is the very chart of foundation of the Isis-Urania Temple, the first one in The Golden Dawn tradition, you know, the Cypher Manuscript.  This document marks the early connection between the English Order in London and the former Order of the Illuminati in Germany.

Of this connection, you will not have to look far to find evidence.  There are a lot of historical documents which give us clear indication of the link, starting from Gershom Scholem`s “From Berlin to Jerusalem” and continuing with the whole number of quotation Mr. Darcy Kuntz offers to us with his book “The Golden Dawn Source Book”, where we can find articles of Ron Heisler, Francis King, Gerald Suster, Ellic Howe, Rafael Prinke, Richard Kaczinski, Gareth Medway.  (I wrote as flying rolls, into the Epistulae I insufflated into the ears of Fr. VEL, whatever you need to explain this matter.)

The most important  element here is that, whatever The Golden Dawn birth happened in a Rosicrucian context (the founders were also members of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia), nevertheless immediately the Order turned toward a more deeper connection with the Enlightenment`s tradition of the Illuminati, replying what in the past happened with the same Illuminati Order (which, as I show you in the Epistula ad Teutonicos, started its first steps into a Jesuitical context, but immediately it was attracted by the Qabalistic Enlightenment movement of the Haskalah, the Jewish philosophy of Enlightement, and working no more on Rosicrucian documents and system and language (as A.E. Waite demonstrate, see Israel Regardie, The Eye in the Triangle), but into the Qabalistic sources of the inner society inside the Illuminati Order, the Chabrath Zerech Aor Boqer, which in German was Die Goldene Dammerung or the Loge zur Aufgehende Morgenrothe).

The difference between the so-called “Traditional and/or Hermetical Order of the Golden Dawn” and “The Open Source Order of the Golden Dawn” is not just about historical roots:  it`s also about their development.

The Traditionalists never recognized the work of some Adepti who revealed the secret work of the Societas – Rituals, Practices, etc. – to the world (nevetheless the prophecy of a general reform of Europe is in the inner core of the Rosicrucian Manifesto`s, as is shown in the motto “Post CXX Annos Patebo”).  Therefore, the Traditionalists don`t recognize the work of Adepti as Aleister Crowley and Israel Regardie, denying the concept of the reform in Thelema “The Law is for All”.

This is the main point, because at this step the difference is fully clear:  you have two authentic Orders of the Golden Dawn.

One is about secret, hierarchy, doctrine of predestination, and with an elitarian system:  this is the Traditionalist.

The other one is the Enlightened one, stating that enlightenment is someone that each person, if in the right condition, can join.  This is the Open Source Order of the Golden Dawn.

Note on the historical roots of the identities and differences between Rosicrucianism and Enlightenment

Tracks and documents about the birth of Enlightenment inside the context of the Rosicrucian system, can be found even through the oppositer of the Enlightenment doctrine.  Sometimes, as you know, this doctrine has been used as the center of the conspiracion`s theory, which thinks the French Revolution was determined by a Jewish/Masonic plot.

We take refuge from this theory, in the awareness that history is never working as arithmetic does when you say 2+2=4.  Notwithsttanding, it`s clear for each person of normal intelligence that the most advantaged people by the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen – which is the main human achievement carried on by the French Revolution – they were the people who were formerly in an under position, without rights, as the Jews were before 1793 (still accused by the Church of “deicide”, to be the people who killed God – fact which is of course impossible because of the its inner metaphysical nature).

So, in the awareness that if Jews people worked for the Universal Declaration ffor themselves, nevertheless this work was something really inspired by something more high, and th achievement of this Declaration is something which we consider among the most important principle the world ever saw into its human history.  And this is Enlightenment.

Oppositer as the abbe` Augustin Barruel, in books as “Memoirs of Jacobinism”, instead focuse their concentration upon fear, especially the fear aristocracy and ecclesiastic elites feeled to lose their privilege condtion.   Working against the Illuminaten Order of Weishaput and Knigge, Barruel`s states that “irreligion and unqualified Liberty and Equality are the genuine and original Secrets of Free Masonry, and the ultimatum of a regular progress through all its degrees, establishing a connection between Illuminati and the French Revolution (see: http://freemasonry.bcy.ca/anti-masonry/stauffer.html). According to the Barruel integralist vision, the great inspirers of this covert attack upon monarchy were Voltaire, Montesquieu, and Rousseau. Voltaire, though by nature a friend of kings, whose favor and caresses were his delight, yet, since he found them standing in the way of his efforts to extirpate Christianity, was led to oppose them, and to substitute the doctrines of equality of rights and liberty of reason for his earlier emphasis upon loyalty to sovereigns. Unwittingly, through his Spirit of Laws, Montesquieu had helped on the antimonarchical resolution by his heavy emphasis upon the essential differences between monarchies and democracies, thus for the first time suggesting to the French people that they lived under a despotic government and helping to alienate them from their king. As for Rousseau, in his Social Contract he had widened the path which Montesquieu had opened.265. His doctrines had the effect of placing monarchy in an abhorrent light. They filled the minds of the people with a passion for Liberty and Equality. The systems of Montesquieu and Rousseau, particularly, induced the Sophisters of Impiety to combine the task of overthrowing monarchy with the task of overthrowing religion, considering it as an obscurantist system.

As Vernon [L.] Stauffer says (New England and the Bavarian Illuminati, formerly quoted), although the Order of the Illuminati was dead, the world had yet to reckon with its specter – and this sounds like the begininnig of the Marx-Engels Manifesto. But there is a connection more complex and even more deep that is not easily to see. In the year 1797 there appeared at Edinburgh, Scotland a volume bearing the following title: “Proofs of a Conspiracy against All the Religions and Governments of Europe, carried on in the Secret Meetings of the Free Masons, Illuminati, and Reading Societies.” Its author, John Robison, an English savant and Freemason, was persuated that the introduction of French Freemasonry into Germany according was followed by these results, and that the political issue was a special fruit of the German tree. A prominent British occultist, William Wynn Westcott, about 1880, became a leading member of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia (SRIA), an occult society open only to master masons. He was born in December 1848 at Leamington, Warwickshire, England. He lost both parents before the age of ten and was adopted by Richard West-cott Martyn, an uncle who was a surgeon by profession. Westcott was educated at the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School at Kingston-upon-Thames, London, and studied medicine at University College, London. The SRIA was organized in 1865 by Robert Wentworth Little and Kenneth R. H. Mackenzie. The Metropolitan College was founded in London in 1865 with Wentworth Little as supreme magus, and a Societas Rosicruciana in Scotia was started soon afterward, followed by provincial lodges. Some famous names associated with the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia include Sir Francis Burdett (vice president) and author-occultist-politician Lord Edward Bulwer Lytton (grand patron 1871-73) and Kenneth Mackenzie. The aims of the society were: “… to afford mutual aid and encouragement in working out the great problems of Life, and in discovering the Secrets of Nature; to facilitate the study of the system of Philosophy founded upon the Kabala and the doctrines of Hermes Trismegistus, which was inculcated by the original Fratres Rosae Crucis, of Germany; and to investigate the meaning and symbolism of all that now remains of the wisdom, art and literature of the ancient world.” In spite of these resounding aims, the society confined itself mainly to lectures and Freemasonry rituals, until Westcott began to inquire the German roots of the Enlightenment doctrine, finding a new way to conceive Rosicrucianism. Through the documents helded by the SRIA, he knew about the Germanic Masonic Order of the Garter in Frankfurt, the influence on the Illuminati, and its transformation in the Loge zur Aufgehenden Morgenrothe, and contact between German and English in this path were linked by August Frederick, the duke of Sussex, as stated by Gershom Scholem (From Berlin to Jerusalem, ….) In the 1885, the Frankfurt Lodge was helded by Theodor Reuss, who was working on the resetting of the Illuminati Order. His secretary, Fraulein Anna Sprengler [Soror Dominatibur Astris], was the intemediary who made possible the transfert of the document called “Cypher” from the German lodge, now called “Die Goldene Dammerung”, to England. Thereupon Westcott corresponded with Sprengel for months. In a first phase, Westcott was afraid the document wasn’t an original. The Jewish words which compose the system of the Cypher in steps and degree were explained by S. L. MacGregor Mathers, also a member of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia. To accomplish this task, Mathers held the aid of the English translation of the Latin book Cabala Denudata of Knorr von Rosenroth, which was at its turn the translation of three Jewish treatise, part of the Zohar. Westcott was authorized to found an English branch of the German occult society Die Goldene Dämmerung. In 1887, Westcott, Mackenzie, and W. R. Woodman were concerned in the formation of the Isis-Urania Temple of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, in which the esoteric Freemasonry of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia was expanded into a more complex occult system. Westcott, Mathers, and W. R. Woodman thereupon founded the Isis-Urania temple of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1888. [Insufflated by Altotas and redacted by Davide Crimi.
